Sometimes, a doodle becomes more than a drawing. It finds its way onto paper, becomes a handmade card, or turns into an ornament someone looks forward to hanging each Christmas.
At Barrs2Design, that journey starts with Deano’s hand-drawn geometric doodles.
From doodles to handmade cards
For years, stamping and paper crafting offered a way to turn something simple into something personal. A sheet of paper could become a birthday greeting, a holiday wish, or a little reminder that someone was thinking of you. And with two sides to every sheet, there was always room to try again!
When Deano’s modern geometric doodles entered the mix, a whole new set of possibilities opened up. His patterns inspired new card designs and eventually became part of the paper itself. Each card offered another way to share his artwork with friends and family.
To doodle or not to doodle? At this point, there may be no turning back!
A Christmas tradition takes shape
Over the past couple of Christmases, one of Deano’s doodles has become the starting point for a simple plywood ornament and a matching card.
What began as a handmade holiday greeting has grown into a tradition. Friends look forward to discovering the new design each year, and some have started collecting the ornaments.
The 2025 ornament included a touch of foil. That little addition was so well received that a new technique is now in the works for the 2026 design.
With October here and more than 100 ornaments to make, it’s time to get busy. Wish us luck, and stay tuned for this year’s design!
What is artisan geometric artwork?
For Barrs2Design, it begins with a hand-drawn doodle. Deano’s designs bring together repeating shapes, balanced patterns, and unexpected turns. Some elements are symmetrical; others follow a less predictable path.
The next chapter happens when those drawings meet a material. Paper becomes a greeting card. Plywood becomes a keepsake ornament. The same doodle takes on a different character with each new use.
That’s the pleasure of going from doodle to design: seeing where a drawing can lead, and what it might become next.
