Nature’s doodles take years to be created
First, a tree must grow against the odds, weathering the seasons. Along the way, nature leaves its marks.
How nature creates spalted wood
As a tree ages or becomes weakened, insects will leave trails or channels in the wood by eating and moving through the tree. Then moisture fills the channels and allows fungus to form.
Spalting is the black coloration associated with the decay process caused by fungi, forming in the channels into the cell structure of the wood. which creates the striking dark lines that create nature’s own doodles.
When nature or people fell a tree, it is, milled into boards, the patterns within revealed, patterns like highways. No two boards have the same markings. For Deano, that individuality is part of the wood’s beauty, a record of nature’s journey that becomes the starting point for something new.
Nature’s doodles meet Deano’s artistry
Deano sees how nature’s doodles can work alongside his own hand-drawn designs to create a true one-of-a-kind piece of artwork. He can apply the same design to another piece of wood, but without those same natural markings, the original can never be recreated. See our Doodle Band on Spalted, Tiger Maple & Walnut Keepsake Box.
As an artist and craftsman, Deano recognizes the beauty in the wood’s signs of struggle and triumph. Through his craftsmanship, he honors that journey, creating something to be admired for years to come.
Nature creates the canvas. Deano adds his doodles. Together, they tell a unique story.
